Spiritual Disciplines

Dallas Willard, in his book The Divine Conspiracy, says “A discipline is any activity within our power that we engage in to enable us to do what we cannot do by direct effort.”

The spiritual disciplines are simply the habit of Jesus we adopt to partner with the Holy Spirit in being transformed to be like Jesus, for the benefit of others.

Disciplines can be a hard word for us to understand, one we often associate with correction. That’s not what we are talking about here. Rather than Spiritual Disciplines, we can call them spiritual practices – things we do over and over again…activities that orientate all your life around God.

To help you go deeper and grow we have provided a number of tools that you can use to spend time with God as He transforms you. This is not an exhaustive list, really just some ideas to get you started. We will keep updating these so it’s worth coming back here regular to see what’s new.

In this video, Spiritual Director Johanna leads us through a reflection on some of the words of Jesus from John 12, so that we can practice finding our true security in our connection with him, and him alone.

Visio Divina
Or “sacred seeing”,  is an ancient form of Christian prayer in which we allow our hearts and minds to focus on an image to see what God might have to say to us. In this exercise, we are using Rembrandt’s “Storm on the Sea of Galilee” which depicts the story in Luke 8.

The Daily Examen for Kids
This is an ancient practice helping us to prayerfully reflect on our days. This "Daily Examen for Kids" video helps children engage with this spiritual exercise, inviting them to slow down and find God in every part of their day.

Thankfulness
In times of uncertainty, we recognise how important it is to draw close to God and focus our hearts and minds on him – the one in whom our hope is in. This video from Vineyard's The Spiritual Direction team will help you connect with Jesus and rest in his presence.
